It is easy to think of yourself as immortal. After all, no one wants to contemplate about when they die. But all too often, people pass away before they are ready to and leave their estate unplanned and in the hands of the courts. It doesn’t matter how old you are, or even if you are extremely healthy, it is important to plan your estate so that you can ensure that things are taken care of the way that you want them to be taken care of.

Wills can be simple or can be very intricate, depending on your needs. With a simple will, you can decree what you would like to be done with any property you own, who you would like to have custody of any children you may have, and who you would like to be the executor of the estate. It is important, when choosing an executor, that you choose someone who you know will adhere to your wishes. Make sure that you talk with that executor so that they know exactly where you stand on many issues. You can also start a more complicated will, where you set up specific trusts for family or friends. Often, parents will set up trusts for their children to ensure that they are taken care of if something tragic should occur.

Some believe that it is necessary to have a Power of Attorney in order to execute the wishes you leave in your will. A Power of Attorney is not necessary in order to make your will be followed, but it is always recommended, just in case you fall ill and are unable to make decisions yourself. Planning for the future can be a hard thing, but the more organized and planned your will is, the easier things will be for those you leave behind.
